Bought a PS3

Decided to purchase a PS3 because the current 60G version is EOL and Sony has reduced prices to $499 in anticipation of a new 80G version at $599. The $499 version is attractive because it still will have firmware support for PS2 games (unlike the new 80G version or the European versions) so might as well get one now

Sony PS3 or dedicated BluRay player

I have been looking at getting into HD videos and from I can see, BluRay seems to be winning. The PS3 is a good bet in terms of a high end BluRay player as well as being a game console. And at $600(US) it's the cheapest BluRay player out there.

But now Sony have announced the BDP-S300 which is their second generation standalone player that will retail for US$500. Being a proper BR player it has a standard IR remote, standard player form factor and supports the latest technology such as Dolby TrueHD and 60Hz/24fps

Looks like the way to go since I am not a gamer. I think I will head down that route rather than the PS3 given the cost savings and more integrated nature of the unit
